Deborah Cox's back after her Jazz album : Destination Moon, seems to have finally decided to go back to a more soul / R&B type. The 34 Years old singer, pregnant with her 3rd child released "The Promise" on November 13th 2008 on Deco Recording Group.
After hearing "Beautiful U R", i was tempted to take a listen to this one. I had to listen to the album couple times to let it grow on me. Indeed full of Love songs but still couldn't get into it as much as her previous album. She definitely grown vocally and obviously lyrically.
She opened up with "Love Is Not Made in Words" which seems to have sample the "young and the restless" theme, song, mostly composed of piano with other sound. In this one she's just asking to be showed how much you love her instead of using words, which isn't enough anymore.
"You Know Where My Heart Is" gave me an 80's feeling, you can almost visualize her in the old schools outfit singing in a jazz club. Didn't really like this one.
"Did you ever Love Me" was a smooth slow tempo.
Then "The Promise" with only a piano almost accapella, similar to Toni Braxton style, where she sings about you're not alone, she'll be your friend, that she can't promise the moon but she'll always be true. Beautiful!
"All Over Me" screamed Janet Jackson, the way she sang it, the kind of beat etc. Most people don't seem to do it right but she did it marvelously.
One of my favorite "Saying Goodbye" where she sang "Thank you for saying goodbye, making me cry, leaving me here all alone in the dark. You save my life, that beautiful night, you said goodnight". Everything was in harmony, The beat, the voice and the lyrics. My Second favorite was a dancing / Pop style "Down 4 u".
She seems to have remixed the original "Where do we go from here" where she released a shower of powerful vocals on.
The album is definitely a good buy just don't listen to it once cause you won't like it. You will need a few listen to really study it and get into it. Packed with Love, Friendship and courage tracks. Out of the 10 Tracks only one i didn't particularly like. I would definitely say this is an album for "Grown" musical people.
