MP4 Player

Yo i've got this Ipod nano MP4 player and i'm having problems getting itunes to recognize it. I don't know where i'm at is like hundreds of miles away from a apple store so is not like i have them to my disposal, so anybody have an Ipod MP4 player and got there's to work with itunes? I don't know but i'm guessing MP4's are not really popular in north america
