An arch-enemy of your friendly neighborhood web-spinner may be getting a spinoff of his own.
A script centered on "Spider-Man" villain Venom is being written by Gary Ross, reports Variety.com. Ross, best-known as the director of 2003's "Seabiscuit," penned 2007's "Spider-Man 3" and is currently working on the fourth installment of the successful film franchise based on the Marvel Comics hero.
The Venom character, who initially appeared onscreen in "Spider-Man 3," will go from heavy to hero in the spinoff, according to Variety.com.
Played by Topher Grace, Venom was originally Eddie Brock - a rival of Spider-Man's alter ego Peter Parker at the Daily Bugle - who gets infected by an alien parasite and gains superpowers.
The news of Venom's transformation from baddie to good guy - and the fact he may be getting his own movie - already has some fanboys in a snit.
"I am very much a Marvel geek and I think this is a bad idea," wrote a "Spider-Man" fan on EW.com's reader forum. "Venom should've never been in the 3rd Spider-Man movie to begin with - so to make a whole spin off film about a boring alien symbiote seems pretty superfluous."
