Chamillionaire Talks Grammys, "Winning Awards Make People That Don't Wanna Pay Attent

Taking a break from his busy schedule, Chamillionaire caught up with SOHH to discuss his two Grammy nominations, his forthcoming mixtape, Mixtape Messiah 2, and the decline of hip-hop record sales.

Still high off winning big at the MTV Video Music Awards and the BET Hip-Hop Awards, Chamillionaire has been nominated for two Grammys; one for Best Rap Song and the other for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group.

"I think every entertainer gon' want the award, but to me it's not necessarily about the award, it's like... I worked real, real hard to kinda get people to know who I am," Chamillionaire told SOHH. "And it was so crazy cause for so many years I've been doing it independently and underground is kinda different in my area so just trying to break out of that little underdog mode, the awards kinda do that for you. Winning all these awards make these people that don't wanna pay attention to you, pay attention."

As SOHH previously reported, the self-proclaimed "mixtape messiah" is readying the follow-up to his highly successful mixtape of the same name. The mixtape will become available as a free download at ::Chamillionaire on Christmas Eve. The release will coincide with the re-launch of the web site.

"I have a fan base that's been with me for a long time when I was putting out all the mixtapes," Chamillionaire explained. "You start doing all the awards and all that stuff and you start to leave that audience and I respect that mixtape audience cause that's how you get the biggest buzz really. I can make a million dollars off that CD, but instead of me trying to give it away I'm just gonna give it away for free."

Sales have considerably dropped in hip-hop since The Sound Of Revenge went platinum. But Chamillionaire isn't worried. With Ultimate Victory tentatively slated to hit stores next March, he's confident that he'll do his numbers. "That's part of the problem right there. Everybody is so focused on first week numbers. People don't remember when Akon came out and sold like 15,000 records his first week and went platinum. When I drop my album I sold 130-something and people thought I was gon' flop and I went platinum still.

"I went out there and worked," he continued. "I feel like if it's good music... Good music can flop too. People put out good music, but they don't work it. I'ma just put both of them together, good music and then go out there and work harder than anybody and I think I'll get the results I want, whether the climate is bad or not."

Chamillionaire's Mixtape Messiah 2 will be available on ::Chamillionaire on Christmas Eve.
