1 Year Old Pregnant with her own Twin

A team of doctors in Saudi Arabia are working through a unique situation in which a mother gave birth to a baby girl who herself was pregnant. It initially went unnoticed in the 1-year-old, who suffers from a form of diamniotic twin pregnancy.

Doctors say that in this case, a blastocyst's totipotential cells divided unequally, causing the smaller mass of cells to lodge inside the other embryo which is more mature. The odds of the occurrence is 1 in 500,000, with 51 other known cases.

An abortion of the parasitic fetus is being considered by the doctors in order to save the baby girl's life. If they don't do anything, the fetus can leach blood from the baby and grow to the point where it will pose a threat to her life.
