ATLANTA* - A Georgia college student who has already lost a leg to a rare, flesh-eating bacterial infection is now expected to suffer the loss of her fingers too, her father said.
Aimee Copeland, 24, was kayaking and zip-lining along the Little Tallapoosa River near Carrollton, Georgia, on May 1 when the line broke and she sustained a cut to her calf.
Emergency room doctors closed the wound with 22 staples and released Copeland, a graduate student at West Georgia University. But after her conditioned worsened, Copeland was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis, a rare flesh-eating bacterial infection.
Copeland, who already suffered the amputation of a leg at the hip, was still listed in critical condition on Sunday, said Barclay Bishop, spokeswoman for Doctor’s Hospital in Augusta.
She would not provide any other details, but Aimee’s father, Andy Copeland, said in a web posting over the weekend that her fingers were also likely to be lost to the infection ravaging her body.
He said she may retain the use of her palms after surgery, however, something that would potentially leave her with enough muscle control to use prosthetics.
Doctors are “awaiting a safe time” before conducting further surgery, the father wrote.
Necrotizing fasciitis is often initially overlooked by doctors because it invades tissue deep inside the wound while the outer wound appears to be healing normally, Dr. William Schaffner of the Vanderbilt University Medical School said.
“This often is a very subtle infection initially,” Schaffner said. “These bacteria lodge in the deeper layers of the wound. The organism is deep in the tissues and that’s where it’s causing its mischief.”

Peter walks into the lab with Olivia searching for Walter, they become worried when Olivia attempts to call Astrid but gets the voice mail. Peter attempts to ease Olivia’s worries regarding her Cortexiphan new found powers. They are interrupted by a call from a worried Jessica who comments on feeling like someone is following her. We see September walking in the house and gets stuck in place by a symbol on the floor. Olivia and Peter goes to investigate but doesn’t find her, they see a huge whole on the wooden floor. Olivia stars worrying, wondering if she put her life in danger. They get interrupted again by Broyles, telling them that Astrid was transported to the hospital after getting short, she asks him about Walter but he thought he was with them. They question Astrid who explains what happened, the strange noises from animals she didn’t recognize, give them the location of the warehouse. She feels guilty, cries that she couldn’t prevent Walter’s abduction but Peter eases her worries.

They go to the warehouse to find September who explains he can’t move, just then Jessica walks in pointing a gun at them. She explains to them that these Observers aren’t special, they just have high end tech. She comments that Bell knew that if they put Olivia in harms way, he would show up. She attempts to shoot him but stops all the bullets. She comments that Bell gave her a new one, that shoots faster, shoots and it’s a hit. Olivia begs him to stop it, she counters she only wants to upset her shoots again but Olivia stops the bullet and redirects them back at her. Olivia comments on now knowing how he got shot, as Peter frees him, he’s surprised as she explains, they had this conversation about him seeing all the futures and she had to die. He says he doesn’t know about it since it didn’t happen yet. He leaves to investigate what he meant and hopes he will be back in time.

The paramedic brings the body to the lab as they hook up Jessica to machines that brings her back to life for a short period to question her. Olivia talks with Nina wondering why Bell is activating her, playing with her emotions to create more powerful results. Jessica awakes, she talks about a boat, Bell being a great man, using an energy source, as time runs out, Olivia gets upset, shakes her up asking to to tell her where Bell is, as she touches her she electrocutes her. Peter realizes that they are on a boat. Nina asks Peter for a Mag meeter as Olivia realizes she is the energy source, that he’s been activating her to use her to collapse both universes. Nina realizes with Olivia, they can find him.

Back on Bell’s boat, Bell reminds him that he hated God for letting him lose Peter twice, that It was his ideas at first, that’s why he asked him to cut the ideas out of his brain. He continues that he has cancer, that dosing himself with Cortexiphan is slowing the cancer and now he is God. He comments on Olivia being a remarkable girl

Back at Fringe’s division, Olivia panics as Peter tries to calm her down reminding her that things have changed, because he’s there to support her. They share a hug as they are told they found bell and flies to his location. They fly over the location but can’t see him, Nina says perhaps he is on the other side, crossing to get to the safe spot, Olivia can cross over and Peter can see it so they have to combine their ‘powers’ to get to it. They jump and land right on the boat.

Walter picks up a gun as Olivia and Peter walks in. Bell calls this unexpected, explains that he thought him and Walter would die off and leave the new species to survive but then calls Peter and Olivia the new Adam and Eve. Peter tells him to shut everything off, he counters that he can’t that Olivia is the engine, every breathe she takes brings them closer to Nirvana. He pushes Peter to kill him that he wouldn’t be the first God to be murdered for creation. Walter asks them to forgive him and shoots Olivia in the head. Everything turns stops. He turns over and aims at Bell who’s clearly surprised but call it cleaver. He rings the Bell and tells him that he’s going to pay a steep price and disappears.

Peter is crying as Walter tells him to hurry up, he slaps some senses out of his head to remind him that the Cortexiphan gave her healing powers that they need to get the bullet out before it regenerates. He gets the bullet out, Olivia heals.

Broyles gets congratulates for his team saving the world, He offers him funding for his Fringe division and calls him Colonel Broyles. Broyles offers a job to Nina.

At the hospital, Peter awaits news from Olivia, the doctor tells him, she’s ready to come home, Walter tells Peter that Cortexiphan should be out of her system, so she’s almost normal. He goes to see her, shows her a house he believes would be perfect, she announces that she’s pregnant and everyone rejoices.

Walter is back at the lab as September tells him, they have to warn the others, they are coming. Walter asks, ‘Who’s coming’?

My Thoughts

- This episode was brilliant! They knew just how to close the first 4 seasons and to open the bracket for the Observers part. It completely understand WHY the Observers want to take over. Could it be what Bell had seen? Or is he somewhat related with the Observers thanks to his new found ‘powers’ thanks to Cortefixphan. How did Bell disappear with the Bell? I’m still puzzled on what he did to Olivia? I supposed he killed her or perhaps switched bodies like he did before?

Sweet success — it's a term that's used often but, in the case of aspiring teenage tycoon Mallory Kievman from Connecticut, that's exactly what she has her sights set on. The 13-year-old has come up with lollipops — called Hiccupops — that she says can stop hiccups, and already has a patent pending on them.

Kievman developed the pops over the past two years after trying more than 100 folk remedies, from eating sugar to drinking a glass of water while upside-down. She finally settled on apple cider vinegar and sugar, the former being something she says can overstimulate nerves in your throat involved in hiccuping reflex and cease the uncomfortable reflex.

She entered her invention into the Connecticut Invention Convention last spring and came away with top honors of innovation and patentability. One of her prizes was having a patent filed for Hiccupops on her behalf. Another involves a team of business students from the University of Connecticut helping her bring the candy to market, hopefully this summer.

Her biggest hurdles now are finding a mixture that hardens and stays that way on the shelf, and tweaking the taste. Once that's done, Kievman, who ultimately wants to be a doctor, will be ready to ink a deal with a manufacturer and finally clean up the mess she's been making in her parents' kitchen.

"I really honestly believe that if it did happen, it wouldn't be a bad thing," Voorhies revealed. "We tend to circumvent and come back to this topic quite often . . .so I think the buzz might catch."

LUXOR, Egypt — The funeral of a 28 year-old waiter in southern Egypt turned into a celebration when he woke up after being declared dead.

Hospital officials had pronounced dead Hamdi Hafez al-Nubi, who came from the village of Naga al-Simman in the southern province of Luxor, after he suffered a heart attack while working.

His family says grieving relatives took him home and, according to Islamic tradition, washed his body and prepared him for burial Friday evening.

A doctor sent to sign the death certificate found it strange that his body was warm. At closer observation she discovered he was still alive.

His mother fainted upon hearing the good news.

With the doctor’s assistance, both al-Nubi and his mother were awakened and soon were celebrating with guests.
