TRENTON, N.J. - Retired NBA star Jayson Williams has agreed to a plea deal that would send him to prison for up to three years for accidentally shooting a driver at his New Jersey estate in 2002, a person with knowledge of the case told The Associated Press on Thursday.

Williams, who retired in 2000 after playing nine seasons in the NBA for the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Nets, was to face a retrial in January on a reckless manslaughter count.

The person, who was not authorized to speak about the case, told the AP on condition of anonymity that Williams is to plead guilty Friday to aggravated assault. Because a gun was used in the crime, Williams must serve at least 18 months in prison, the person said.

Several messages left for defense attorney Joseph Hayden were not returned Thursday. The state attorney general’s office, which has taken over the case, declined to comment on any aspect of the case because of a gag order.

Christofi’s sister, Andrea Adams, said Thursday that she was told by prosecutors this week to be ready to go to court Friday because a plea deal was possible. They offered no specific information on the deal, she said.

Adams has mixed feelings about a prison term of three years or less.

“I would like to see him do jail time,” she said. “I don’t know if that’s enough time.”

The plea deal would resolve all charges in a case that dragged out for nearly eight years.

Witnesses testified that Williams was showing off a shotgun in his bedroom in February 2002 when he snapped the weapon shut and it fired one shot that struck driver Costas Christofi in the chest, killing him. They also testified that Williams initially placed the gun in the dead man’s hands and instructed those present to lie about what happened.

The defense has maintained the shooting was an accident and that Williams panicked afterward.

During his trial, the jury deadlocked on the reckless manslaughter count, acquitted Williams of aggravated manslaughter and convicted him of covering up the shooting. He was never sentenced for the cover-up counts, pending the outcome of the retrial, and has remained free on bail.

The Star-Ledger of Newark was the first to report that a deal had been reached.

Williams had been offered pleas that would have called for him to serve less prison time, the person told the AP.

One of earlier offers, the person said, came just before a hearing last month on whether a racial slur used by a detective and other conduct by the county prosecutor’s office should result in dismissal of the reckless manslaughter count and the cover-up convictions. State Superior Court Judge Edward Coleman later rejected the defense’s claim that, had they known about the slur, they would have changed their trial strategy.

A.I as come off wavers and now he's a free agent. Now with this being said do you think he did this because he wanted out of Memphis and didn't have the guts to admit that or was this a genuine leave?

There has been talks of him joining the Knicks, but what caught me off gaurd is that report shows Miami Heat is now showing interest as well:?:. Do really think him and Wade could really coinside? Personally I think A.I loves the attention and wants all wyes on him like he had when he first hit the NBA.

What's your thoughts? Do you think he should sign with the Knicks or the Heat?

France admits cheating in World Cup clincher

SAINT-DENIS, France - France qualified for its fourth consecutive World Cup when officials missed...

SAINT-DENIS, France - France qualified for its fourth consecutive World Cup when officials missed an obvious hand ball by Thierry Henry that led to William Gallas’ overtime goal in a 1-1 tie against Ireland on Wednesday night.

With help from Swedish referee Martin Hansson, who failed to call the hand ball, France avoided a penalty-kicks shootout and won the home-and-home, total-goals playoff 2-1. The French had come away with a 1-0 victory in Dublin last Saturday.

The game appeared headed to penalty kicks when Florent Malouda sent a free kick to Henry at the post to the right of goalkeeper Shay Given in the 103rd minute. Henry got between defender Paul McShane and Given, stopped the ball with his left hand, then used his hand again and poked the ball with his outstretched right foot in front of the net.
“He almost caught it and walked into the net with it,” said Robbie Keane, who had put the Irish ahead in the 33rd minute.

Gallas headed the ball into the net from about 1 yard as Irish players raised their hands in protest at Hansson.

Soccer does not allow officials to use video replay, although the assistant referees can point out infractions to the referee.

“I will be honest, it was a hand ball. But I’m not the ref,” Henry said. “I played it. The ref allowed it. That’s a question you should ask him.”

Gallas hardly knew what happened.

“It went so fast. I saw Thierry’s pass. The Irish were surprised, and I put my head, my chest,” he said as his voice trailed off.

Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni was livid and had to be calmed by officials. Irish fans — about 8,000 in one section behind the goal — chanted “Cheat! Cheat!” at Henry.

“I’m not only disappointed tonight, I’m also very sad,” Trapattoni said. “The referee should have asked Henry, I’m sure he would have admitted there was a hand ball.”

Added Keane:
“When you see the reaction of Shay, he’s two yards away from it. You don’t get a reaction like that (otherwise).

“He’s an absolutely top player and has been for a long time but it was a clear hand ball. He actually dragged it in from going out. I wouldn’t expect it from anybody.”

At the final whistle, Given collapsed and lay on the ground in dejection for several minutes as France celebrated. Gallas jumped into coach Raymond Domenech’s arms.

“It was difficult, arduous and sometimes miraculous,” Domenech said. “It was a victory by the skin of our teeth.”

Domenech felt it was a shame that Ireland didn’t qualify, as well.

“I want to congratulate the Irish players for this battle,” he said. “They gave us a very hard time.”

Ireland, which is missing its second straight World Cup, had gone ahead when Keane took a pass from Damien Duff and beat goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

France had an appeal for a penalty kick turned down by Hansson after Nicolas Anelka tried to go around Given and went down in the eighth minute of overtime.

Lloris made two great saves, on Keane in the first half and against Duff midway through the second.

Domenech had to reshuffle his team because of injuries, replacing Eric Abidal with Julien Escude to partner Gallas in the center of the defense.

Escude was injured in a clash of heads with teammate Patrice Evra, then was carried off on a stretcher and replaced by Sebastien Squillaci in the ninth minute.

“We suffered for two years. We have been having some problems with our press, our fans, with other people,” Henry said. “It would have been better to do it in another way, but as I said, I’m not the ref.”

BEREA, Ohio -- If LeBron James truly believes he can help the Cleveland Browns, coach Eric Mangini has an orange helmet waiting for him.

"I think he should come on down," Mangini said.

The NBA superstar, who was an All-State wide receiver in high school, said Tuesday night that if he put the time and commitment into it, he could be a good football player. Mangini agreed, calling James "a freak athletically" and said the 6-foot-8, 260-pounder could be dangerous at tight end, wide receiver or even outside linebacker.

More Cleveland Browns Gear >

Browns quarterback Brady Quinn also heard about James' football fetish. He would love to have a target like James to throw to in the red zone.

"That'd be great," Quinn said. "Tell him to suit up and let us know, we'll get him working. Obviously he's an incredibly talented athlete. If he wants to try to play a little bit now, we'd be more than willing to pick him up."

Browns nose tackle Shaun Rogers isn't convinced that James, as great as he is, could step into the NFL and be able to handle the pounding.

"I heard that comment," Rogers said. "I have mixed emotions about that. A great athlete? Yes. A football player? No."

Rogers then looked into TV cameras.

"Yeah LeBron, I said it," he said. "It's a punishing game. I just don't think you can step off the basketball court after not going through this year in and year out and just play football. From that standpoint, I just don't think it's possible. You have to weather and condition your body to take this punishment."

So what if James had a year to train? Could he do it then?

"Yeah, he might make a heckuva tight end," Rogers said. "I'd like to see him out there running down the seam."

After an off season and 1 victory later is Allen Iverson really the Knicks answer? I mean he's not as big as he used to be like 5yrs ago. For one homeboy loves missing practises lmao as well he has a big bagage behind him, biut if they do sign A.I what will happen with then wanting to get King James? Not only that, will A.I be able to coinside with with Lebron.?

My opinion is that he should go to a team like Boston, L.A, or a team of that calibur. A.I needs to realize that times have changed and he's not like MJ, look at KG, Ray Allen they had to join with Paul Peirce so they could get their ring and now they're even more stacked as a team with Rasheed Wallace

check what the story has to say:
Nearly a year ago to the day, Microsoft reinvented Xbox Live with a complete visual overhaul and introduction of a bevy of new services, headlined by Netflix on-demand video streaming. Today, the publisher rolled out this year's Xbox Live fall update, bringing with it the much-hyped introduction of social networking Web sites Facebook and Twitter, as well as Zune HD video support and Internet radio service Last.fm (which is owned by GameSpot parent company CBS Interactive).

A look at the Facebook interface on Xbox Live.
The Twitter and Facebook tabs can be found in the My Community channel on the Xbox Live's dashboard. Twitter integration will allow gamers to post tweets through Xbox Live, but outside of actual games. With the Facebook add-on, Xbox Live gamers can sync their gamertags with their social-networking accounts, as well as share photos and in-game screenshots. Friend updates will also be viewable through the Xbox Live dashboard.

The Xbox 360's Last.fm application can be found in the Music Channel menu. As detailed in GameSpot's recent interview with Xbox Live and Last.fm executives, the service brings the streaming Internet radio service to Microsoft's console. Xbox 360 owners will also gain access to the service's community aspects, such as tailored listening habits, artist information, as well as the Visual Radio slideshow that compiles fan-submitted photos.

Finally, the Zune-branded video functionality will allow Xbox Live users to buy or rent instantly streaming HD video in 1080p and 5.1 surround sound. It is available through the Video Channel.

Beyond the fall update, Microsoft also has its regularly scheduled Xbox Live Arcade and Games on Demand updates on tap this week. Coming to XBLA on Wednesday, Square Enix's Gyromancer is a puzzle-based role-playing game not unlike Vicious Cycle's acclaimed Puzzle Quest and is available for MSP1,200 ($15). Hudson's classic time-management game Diner Dash also heads to Microsoft's online arcade on Wednesday, and can be purchased for MSP800 ($10).

Codemasters' street racer GRID is now available through the Games on Demand channel for $29.99. The third installment in Codemasters' TOCA series, GRID received high critical marks upon its debut in June 2008.
