More Blacks Attempting Suicide - Page 3

Suicide, long considered the bane of White households, is being attempted more often than ever by Blacks – particularly young Blacks, new research shows.

The first nationally representative study to look at attempted suicide among Blacks found that about 70,000 African Americans try to kill themselves each year, and that 4 percent, or roughly 1.4 million, attempt suicide at least once in their lives.

While the lifetime suicide attempt rate is similar to that of Whites, it is higher than the 2.8 percent found among Blacks in previous studies.

Still, there is a common misconception that Blacks don’t commit or even attempt suicide because of cultural and religious beliefs dating back to slavery. The study, however, provides proof that Blacks are not immune to the depression and other factors that lead one to consider taking one’s own life, said University of Michigan researcher Sean Joe, the study's lead author.

The researchers analyzed data from a national survey involving 5,181 Blacks 18 and older. They were questioned about suicide attempts and suicidal thoughts between 2001 and 2003.

Other mental health experts say they are not surprised by the university’s findings, which were published in Wednesday’s Journal of the American Medical Association.

“One thing that held it back was that there was an extreme taboo against suicide in Black communities,” says Dr. Alvin Poussaint, a Harvard University psychiatrist and director of the affiliated Judge Baker Children’s Center. "It was really frowned on by the Black church. But this is a new generation coming up. Now, that taboo might be lessening as the influence of the church weakens.”

Other research also shows the suicide rate of Whites as twice that of Blacks, but there has been a steady upward tick in the number of young Black men attempting to take their lives, thus narrowing the gap between Black and White suicides.

Poussaint tells BET.com that the increase also reflects the fact that many young people don’t have the mechanisms to express anger and anxiety about their displeasure about life.

“There is a lot of anger out there, people with high-anxiety problems,” he says. “Very high levels of anger might be masking depression and unhappiness. If someone is displeased and angry, they may need to get psychological help. This might cut down on the suicide rate.”

Further complicating matters, Poussaint says, is the lack of available mental health services in Black communities, as well as a persistent stigma still associated with using them. “There needs to be more public awareness about depression, anxiety and other mental disorders in the Black community,” he says. “Whenever people are feeling emotional pain from anything, it’s important to get help for it. We need much more public awareness of Blacks and severe depression in order to encourage them to seek help.”

i mean thingz r harder than they were 5-10 yrs ago but shit not this.

We struggled 4 yrs. in the past what's so different now
