High School & College

Did u go to college right after high school?
If not how long of a break did u take?
wen u did sign up, did they give u a hard time?

Just asking bc my cousin is getting ready to graduate HS and it seems as if colleges these days are making their standards EXTRA high...but im thinkin it would be easier to just graduate and then enroll yourself into a college....so i just wanted a few other opinions

i went into uni right after highschool... i wud assume it might be even harder to get in if u take a break tho.. and they might have a harder time once they do get in cuz the material may not be as "fresh"

straight from HS to college....but i agree with trini it depends on the person...if you are disciplined, focused and have ppl who will constantly encouraging/pushing you then you might get away with taking a break then going back later once you know exactly what you want to do...

I agree with everyone with what they said

I went straight from high school to College and boy the first semester i blew off TOTALLY....then i took it seriously...the 2nd semester i left and went back the next one and graduated.

Plan on going back tho to add to my degree already and i do feel i wasted my time is school. They thought me nothing. All i gained was a piece of paper that people barely even pay attention to.

I didn't take my first break from school until after I graduated from college. I got accepted to every college I applied to even though my grades weren't perfect.

My Advice:
If your cousin is willing to dish out the cash, he should go to one of the local private colleges or junior colleges in his area (they're more willing to accept people regardless of grades). And after getting really good grades for 2 years (4 semesters), he can transfer to a better school since most schools want you to do your last 2 years with them to graduate from their school.

But no matter where he decides to matriculate, he should focus on, he needs to emphasize all the extra-curricular activities he's been involved in (it shows that he can multi-task). He gets more points if he can show that he's been the leader in anything (e.g., on the Executive Board of an after-school activity). It's also a good look if he's been working somewhere for a long time (this shows that he's dependable, consistent, and doesn't quit easily).

Most schools want you to write an essay about why you want to attend such-and-such school, so if you or anyone who has good writing skills can help him write his college essay, then that's another plus because to admissions officers, good writing skills translates into success in college.

And he can always go to a community college for two years, then transfer after he gets his Associates. But fear shouldn't stop him from doing what he knows he needs to do.

thanks everyone i'll let her know. bc she is soooo stressing herself bc her average is a 75 n some of these colleges r asking for 87-95. n she doesnt know what she wants to do yet. so I told her to just relax her mind focus on getting the diploma then take some general classes before making a major decision.

oh they do it like that in the states too.. i was under the assumption that in the US the major factor for acceptance were SAT scores

and as for the 75.. many universities may frown on that.. but tell her to try a college if all doesnt work out.. their standards are usually lower and after completing some college she can apply to uni.. but it really all depends on the program she wants into... for exampl.. science has higher standards / cutoff than say a humanities program
