The Knicks’ frontcourt received a major boost on draft night when they selected forward Jordan Hill with the eighth overall pick. It got even stronger minutes later when the team announced the addition of a former No. 2 overall selection.
New York sent veteran guard/forward Quentin Richardson and cash considerations to Memphis for center Darko Milicic, the second pick in the 2003 draft. The Knicks are hoping the 24-year-old Milicic can play up to the potential that made him such a promising prospect just six years ago.
The 7-foot Milicic will provide additional toughness and shot-blocking to the Knicks, who ranked last in rejections last season. He can also run the floor and drain mid-range jumpers, making him a solid fit in Head Coach Mike D’Antoni’s run-and-gone system.
“We think that Milicic will thrive under Mike (D’Antoni),” Walsh said. “He’s a multi-skilled guy who really hasn’t fit in wherever he’s been. In some cases, people asked him to play with his back to the basket. He’s more of an athletic, thin big guy. He’s not like Eddy Curry, but he should function very well with Eddy Curry.”
D’Antoni is equally excited to add Milicic into the fold.
“I am very excited about the possibilities with Darko. He has great size and the skills to really help us.” D’Antoni said. “He can run the floor really well, shoot and has a load of talent.”
Milicic spent the first two seasons of his career in Detroit before being dealt to Orlando during the 2005-06 season. He played the last two years in Memphis, where he averaged 5.5 points and 4.3 rebounds last season.
The trade was announced during the second round of the draft.
“We think we’ve gotten bigger, which we had to do,” Knicks President Donnie Walsh said. “But we’ve done it with athletic-type guys."
