Reports: Titans will wear no. 9 decal on helmets to honor McNair
The Tennessee Titans will honor late quarterback Steve McNair with a No. 9 decal they will wear on the backs of their helmets this season, The (Nashville) Tennessean reported Thursday, citing an NFL source.
Matthew Emmons/US PresswireSteve McNair led the Titans to their only Super Bowl appearance.
The decal will adorn the Titans' helmets starting with Sunday's Hall of Fame Game against the Buffalo Bills in Canton, Ohio, the newspaper reported.
The team consulted with the NFL to have the decal approved, according to the report.
McNair, who was shot and killed in a murder-suicide on July 4, led the Titans to the franchise's only Super Bowl. He played for the Titans from 1995 through 2005, throwing for 27,141 yards and 156 touchdowns with the team and sharing the league's MVP award with Peyton Manning in 2003.
Because the Titans are already wearing a uniform patch this season commemorating the 50th anniversary of the American Football League -- as the Houston Oilers, the franchise was a charter member of the AFL -- another uniform patch honoring McNair was not an option, according to the report.
The team is considering other ways to honor McNair this season, according to the report. He was inducted into the team's ring of honor at LP Field last season.
