I am proud that everybody is coming together to help haiti...but i feel its just a shame that people have to wait for a natural disaster to occur in order to pay any mind to a country that has been suffering long before this happened..

Wyclef Jean raised more than $1.9 million by Friday for the disaster relief effort and is in Haiti "giving aid and assessing the situation," according to his website, Yele Haiti - UPDATES.

Actor George Clooney will host a commercial-free telethon called "Hope for Haiti" presented by MTV next week to raise funds for victims of Tuesday's earthquake, the music network said.

The event will be in Los Angeles and New York and be broadcast on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, CNN, HBO and all MTV Network channels next Friday. Clooney will be joined by Jean and other pop music and movie stars.

Latina pop singer Shakira asked her fans for donations to help rebuild Haiti to be channeled through UNICEF and Jean's foundation.

TEARS AND DONATIONS

Actress Alyssa Milano, a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF, used her blog on The Huffington Post on Thursday to challenge U.S. corporations to match her donation. She said the funds would go to buy medical supplies, tarpaulins, food and water kits for Haiti.

"I cried and then I did the only thing I could do ... I wrote a check to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF for $50,000," she wrote.

Coldplay musician Chris Martin called for donations through Oxfam, whose global ambassador, actress Scarlett Johansson, also appealed for contributions for Haiti.

Oprah Winfrey got involved on Wednesday by asking viewers of her popular show to donate to the Red Cross.

Actor Ben Stiller, who has been raising money for a school in Ceverine in Haiti through Save the Children, also made an appeal on CNN's "Larry King Live" for $10 donations charged to phone bills by texting "Haiti" to 90999.

First lady Michelle Obama made a public appeal for the texting campaign, which had raised $5.9 million for the red Cross by late Thursday.

Cycling legend Lance Armstrong's LiveStrong Foundation pledged $250,000 to help Haiti's recovery, according to its website.

Actor and director Tyler Perry gave $250,000 and set up the Tyler Perry foundation for donations at Haiti Relief Fund :: The Tyler Perry Foundation, Inc :: Tyler Perry.com.

"My heart goes out to Wyclef and to the people of Haiti. I saw the devastation of the island on the news and I was moved, the hundreds of dead bodies piling up on the streets, the buildings destroyed by the earthquake, people working to rescue friends and family trapped in the rubble...and I want to make myself available to help in any way I can,"Beenie Man said in a release.

"I hope that the Caribbean community will also organise quickly and help our brothers and sisters in every way possible, or else we willhave an even bigger disaster on our hands. The schools are packed with dead people, the hospitals full of sick and dying, all communicationscut off...it's a catastrophe."

Beenie Man and Wyclef Jean collaborated on the radio hit, Love Me Now and another song called Lie Detector several years ago.

"Wyclef Jean and I share a passion for improving communities throughout the world and he has always been very hands-on when it comes to looking after his home nation so I can't imagine what he is going through at this very difficult time," Beenie Man, who has also spearheaded social and environmental programmes in tough inner city areas such as Craig Town, Arnett Gardens and Waterhouse in his native Jamaica, said. Beenie Man has already contributed money to the Yele charity to aid humanitarian efforts.

Haiti is regarded as the most impoverished nation in the Western hemisphere and is home to 9 million people, four million of whom live in the capital city, Port-au-Prince and its environs.

The quake's epicenter was only 10 miles from Port-au-Prince. In 2008,Haiti was hit by four hurricanes. Wyclef, a Good will Ambassador toHaiti, started the Yele Haiti Foundation to raise relief funds for thearea following Hurricane Gustav in 2008.

To help Haiti Earthquake Relief, donate $5 by texting YELE to 501501...charity is Wyclef's Yele Haiti - UPDATES

Montserrat radiothon raises EC$50,000 for Haiti

Published on Saturday, January 16, 2010 Email To Friend Print Version

By Cathy Buffonge

ST JOHN’S, Montserrat -- Radio Montserrat (ZJB) hosted a well publicized call-in Radio-thon last evening, which raised more than EC$50,000 (US$18,000) for the people of Haiti. The media here and the Montserrat public have really taken the terrible and tragic situation on board, and the response from the public so far was overwhelming in this small country of approximately 4,500 people.

The money will go to Haiti via the Montserrat Red Cross and the Montserrat Rotary Club, who will channel it through their parent institutions in order to get it out to Haiti in the shortest time possible. In addition to money, several people pledged clothes and other items.

Hosting the programme was Jeevan Robinson, a vibrant Montserratian journalist resident in the UK, who is the coordinator of MNI Alive.com, an interactive website which connects the diaspora with the home country, and provides information and comments on many aspects of Montserrat life.

On the panel for the evening’s programme were Ann Thomas of the Montserrat Red Cross and Sherree Jemmotte Rodney of the Montserrat Rotary Club, as well as two local residents from Haiti, Silane and Marie, who were able to give their personal perspectives, with no news at all of what had happened to their relatives in Haiti. Also taking part in the two and a half hour programme was Montserratian journalist Ben Meade, who has visited Haiti in the past.

Manager of the Royal Bank of Canada, Cassandra Ryan, kept listeners up to date with the amounts pledged so far, as well as the banking details for overseas listeners who wanted to be part of the Montserrat effort. Accounts for donations are open at both the Bank of Montserrat and the Royal Bank. This evening’s radio-thon was jointly sponsored by ZJB Radio, the Montserrat Red Cross, Montserrat Rotary Club, MNI Alive website, and Royal Montserrat Defence Force.

This fund raising effort is small compared to what is required in this catastrophic situation. But for its small size, Montserrat’s tremendous response to this radio-thon, from individuals, businesses, churches and voluntary groups, shows that people including the media are very concerned and are anxious to do their part.

David Rudder’s song “Haiti we’re sorry” has been played constantly on Radio Montserrat, and this evening saw the appearance of a new and moving song on the current tragedy in Haiti by veteran calypsonian Kelvin “Tabu” Duberry. “Save the Children” by Antigua based Montserratian calypsonian “De Bear” is another appropriate song has also been played.

NFL pledges $2.5M to aid Haiti earthquake relief efforts

The National Football League and the NFL Players Association pledged $2.5 million to aid in relief and recovery efforts in Haiti to assist victims of the earthquake.

The NFL and NFLPA will contribute $1 million through their Disaster Relief Fund to the American Red Cross and Partners In Health ($500,000 each). In addition, the NFL and its network partners will run pregame and in-game messages during this weekend's games valued at $1.5 million to promote donations. In addition, NFL owners and players are making their own personal donations.

The NFL is working with its teams, players and media partners to raise money and promote awareness of the recovery efforts. A national PSA will air during each playoff game this weekend driving viewers to American Red Cross, where they can support the recovery efforts. The PSA will feature New Orleans Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma and San Diego Chargers defensive end Jacques Cesaire, two players with Haitian-born parents.

There will be pregame and in-game messages on both CBS and FOX promoting the Red Cross' text-to-give line (text "HAITI" to "90999"). NFL Network programming, ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown, and NFL radio broadcasts also will promote the text-to-give line. NFL.com will have banner ads driving to the Red Cross to donate funds.

There will be in-stadium video board and PA messages in all four stadiums hosting games this weekend promoting the Red Cross' text-to-give program. The Vikings will have a collection drive at their stadium gates for this weekend's game and they will be running an in-game PSA featuring running back Adrian Peterson.

Other NFL players with Haitian ties include Stanley Arnoux (New Orleans), Cliff Avril (Detroit), Gosder Cherilus (Detroit), Antonio Cromartie (San Diego), Louis Delmas (Detroit), Elvis Dumervil (Denver), Pierre Garcon (Indianapolis), Rashad Jeanty (Cincinnati), Ricky Jean-Francois (San Francisco), Max Jean-Gilles (Philadelphia), David Joseph (Tampa Bay), William Joseph (Oakland), Steve Octavien (Dallas), Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (Arizona) and former players D'Antonio Batiste, Vernand Morency and Jonal Saint-Dic.

Created in 2001 to assist organizations directly and indirectly affected by the events of September 11, the NFL-NFLPA Disaster Relief Fund is a collaborative endeavor of the National Football League and the NFLPA. Its goal is to improve the quality of life and help rebuild communities affected by large-scale tragedies. Since its inception, the NFL-NFLPA Disaster Relief Fund has provided aid to those affected by the events of September 11, 2001, the 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia, Hurricane Katrina and the 2007 San Diego wildfires.

Statement by Wyclef Jean:

Saturday, January 16, 2010 at 06:00PM

“My commitment to Haiti is a unique and everlasting bond."

“I formalized that commitment when I formed my first foundation, in 1994. From that day forward, I have spent tireless hours working on behalf of my homeland on development issues as well as human and immigrant rights.

“I have been committed to helping the people of Haiti throughout my life, and that commitment will continue until the day I die.

“It is impossible for me to even comprehend the recent attacks on my character and the integrity of my foundation, Yele Haiti. The fact that these attacks come as we are mobilized to meet the greatest human tragedy in the history of Haiti only serves to perplex me even further.

“I first learned of these baseless attacks when I left Haiti late Friday, where I had been since 12 hours after the earthquake. “Let me be clear: I denounce any allegation that I have ever profited personally through my work with Yele Haiti. These baseless attacks are simply not true.

“In fact, I have, time and again, committed significant amounts of my own money to support the work of Yele Haiti and other organizations in support of our efforts over the years. “More than that, I have spent countless hours, days, months and years of my life committed to the country of Haiti, the people of Haiti and the success of Haiti.

“These baseless allegations were first put forward by a fringe website with a history of pursuing sensationalist story lines. The mainstream media’s pursuit of them has required Yele to divert precious resources during this critical time in order to answer various inquiries. That must end.

“I will continue to commit my focus to what is most important right now: Haiti. Right now, Yele is working with its valuable NGO partners, the U.S. Government, the United Nations and so many others to save lives, honor those who have perished and get aid to the millions of Haitians suffering through the worst human catastrophe of our times.

“I will never give up on my commitment."
