In 19th-century China, seven year old girls Snow Flower and Lily are matched as laotong – or “old sames” – bound together for eternity. Isolated by their families, they furtively communicate by taking turns writing in a secret language, nu shu, between the folds of a white silk fan. In a parallel story in present day Shanghai, the laotong’s descendants, Nina and Sophia, struggle to maintain the intimacy of their own childhood friendship in the face of demanding careers, complicated love lives, and a relentlessly evolving Shanghai. Drawing on the lessons of the past, the two modern women must understand the story of their ancestral connection, hidden from them in the folds of the antique white silk fan, or risk losing one another forever. This movie is a perfect portrayal of friendships between women, from the closeness, compatibility , the sacrifices ,to the hard choices in life that sometimes breaksfriendships. You don’t often watch movies that portrays women friendship, rather how women hate on each other but this once mainly concentrated on how rewarding friendship can be and also, like a marriage, it isn’t easy to maintain. Through thick and thin, they remained there for each other. I learned quite a bit from the movie, it showed both side of their stories. The scenery of china was beautiful, their outfits. I just wished there were more subtittles, some part of the movie had none so it left me wondering what they were saying but it’s barely .5% as the rest is either in english or does have subtitles. Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) plays a small part in this movie as well.
If you enjoy a part of the history of china, the beautiful outfits and scenery of china. You will definitely enjoy this movie.
